Karachi: The Economic Diplomacy Forum (EDF), in collaboration with the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Karachi, organized its first seminar titled “Economic Diplomacy in a Changing World Order: Insights from China’s Success.” The event brought together diplomats, business leaders, policy experts, and academics to discuss the evolving role of economic diplomacy in a rapidly transforming global landscape.

Chinese Consul General Highlights Resilience of China’s Growth

In his keynote address, Chinese Consul General Yang Yundong congratulated the organizers for hosting a timely and meaningful seminar aimed at deepening the understanding of regional and global economic trends. He noted that despite global economic headwinds, geopolitical tensions, and an uncertain international environment, China has remained committed to policies of development, peace, dialogue, and progress.

The Consul General shared key economic indicators showcasing China’s sustained growth. From 2012 to 2024, China’s GDP expanded from USD 7.6 trillion to USD 19 trillion, averaging a growth rate of over six percent. He added that China’s contribution to global economic growth has risen from 11 percent to 17 percent, while more than 100 million people have been lifted out of poverty.

Reaffirming the depth of China-Pakistan relations, Yang emphasized that beyond the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), both nations are strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors to advance shared prosperity.

EDF Underscores Role of Economic Diplomacy

EDF Founder President Dr. Muhammad Farooq Afzal stated that modern diplomacy must extend beyond political engagement and prioritize economic partnerships, trade facilitation, and technological collaboration. He stressed that Pakistan’s long-term prosperity depends on aligning diplomatic efforts with national economic priorities.

Dr. Afzal praised China’s consistent economic vision and transformative growth model, citing the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and CPEC as examples of how strategic economic diplomacy can drive inclusive development. He reiterated EDF’s commitment to serving as a bridge between policy, diplomacy, and business, fostering dialogue and cooperation with friendly nations.

Experts Share Perspectives on Regional Cooperation

Other distinguished speakers, including Dr. Junaid Ahmed, Dr. Huma Baqai, Zubair Motiwala, and Irfan Soomro, Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also addressed the seminar. They shared insights on regional economic integration, sustainable development, and the strategic importance of Pakistan’s role in China-led economic frameworks.
