Karachi: A joint mangrove plantation campaign, organized by the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) and the Mangrove Biodiversity Park, witnessed enthusiastic participation from youth in Rehri Goth and Ibrahim Hyderi. The initiative aimed to promote awareness of environmental conservation in Karachi’s coastal communities.
Youth Raise Awareness on Mangrove Importance
Dozens of young participants took part in the drive, actively planting mangrove saplings while delivering powerful messages on climate action. They explained how mangrove forests serve as natural shields against ocean waves and storms, offering shelter to marine life and supporting biodiversity. Furthermore, they stressed that mangroves are vital to the economic stability of local fishing communities.
Call for Government Action
Participants voiced concern over the declining mangrove cover due to climate change and human activities. They called on the Sindh government to protect existing mangrove forests and to initiate large-scale plantation campaigns to mitigate growing environmental risks.
PFF Chairman Urges Immediate Measures
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum, Mehran Ali Shah, said:
“Mangrove forests are the backbone of our coastal life, vital not only for the survival of marine biodiversity but also for the economic future of local fishing communities. We appreciate the efforts of these young people and urge the Sindh government to take practical steps for the protection of these forests and large-scale plantations.”
