Karachi: Health experts at the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) have warned that nearly 40 million Pakistanis are affected by various eye diseases, emphasizing the need for regular screenings to prevent avoidable blindness.
Speaking at an event marking World Sight Day, DUHS Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Jehan Ara Hasan revealed that 49 percent of blindness cases in Pakistan are caused by cataract, while the remaining 51 percent stem from glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and other disorders.
She noted that despite the high incidence of diabetes in the country, most patients fail to undergo regular retinal examinations, which are crucial for individuals over the age of 40.
The seminar and awareness walk were organized by the Department of Ophthalmology at Dow University Hospital, where participants marched from the Trauma Center to the National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology (NIDE).
Addressing the gathering, Professor Iftikhar Ahmed, Principal of Dow International Medical College, said the purpose of observing World Sight Day was to raise awareness about eye health and blindness prevention. He noted that this was the first large-scale celebration of the day at Dow University, underscoring the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment.
Professor Nisar Ahmed Sial highlighted that at NIDE, special attention is given to eye examinations for diabetic patients, as vision loss is more common among them. He added that glaucoma, often linked to diabetes or elevated intraocular pressure, remains a leading cause of irreversible blindness.
Citing the Pakistan Survey Report 2022, speakers said around 485,000 people in the country are completely blind, while nine million suffer from weak eyesight and require corrective lenses.
During the event, the Dow Organ Support Society also set up an awareness stall to promote eye donation, encouraging attendees to consider contributing to the cause.
The program concluded with the presentation of certificates and flower bouquets to speakers, doctors, and staff who contributed to organizing the event.
