Islamabad: In a momentous ceremony at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif jointly conferred the rank of Field Marshal upon Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir on Thursday.
The prime minister handed over the Field Marshal’s baton to General Munir in the presence of top civil and military leadership, including PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
President Zardari lauded General Munir’s military service, saying, “Your career is forged with courage and refined by wisdom.” He highlighted Munir’s leadership during “Marka-e-Haq” and praised the armed forces for maintaining operational cohesiveness and restraint during recent tensions with India.
He emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to peace but warned that any aggression would be met with full force.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to Field Marshal Munir for his leadership during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, calling it a landmark military, moral, and diplomatic victory. He praised the synergy between military and civilian leadership in confronting national security and economic challenges.
The ceremony marked the first time in decades that a serving army chief was elevated to Field Marshal—a rare and symbolic recognition of exceptional service to the nation.
