Karachi: The media briefing for the multinational Maritime Exercise AMAN-25 was held in Karachi, where Commander Pakistan Fleet, Rear Admiral Abdul Munib, provided insights into the upcoming exercise and the maiden AMAN Dialogue. The event is scheduled to take place from February 7–11 in Karachi.

Strategic Importance of AMAN-25

Rear Admiral Munib emphasized that the evolving global landscape has shifted focus from geopolitics to geo-economics, making the security of global sea-borne trade and energy routes more crucial than ever. The Indian Ocean Region faces both traditional and non-traditional security threats, necessitating collaborative strategies among maritime nations.

He stated that Pakistan recognizes that no single country can tackle maritime security challenges alone. In response, the Pakistan Navy initiated the biennial Multinational Exercise AMAN in 2007 under the slogan “Together for Peace.” The exercise aims to foster cooperation among maritime nations, ensuring safe and sustainable practices while collectively addressing emerging threats.

Growth and Scope of Exercise AMAN

The first edition of Exercise AMAN, held in 2007, was attended by 28 countries and primarily focused on counterterrorism and anti-piracy operations. Over the years, its scope and participation have expanded significantly. The ninth edition, AMAN-25, will feature participation from over 60 countries, including naval ships, aircraft, special operations forces, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) marine teams, and international observers.

The exercise is divided into two phases:

  • Harbour Phase (February 7–9): Includes seminars, operational discussions, professional demonstrations, international gatherings, and sports fixtures.
  • Sea Phase (February 10–11): Features tactical maneuvers, maritime security drills, anti-piracy and counterterrorism exercises, search and rescue operations, and live firing exercises. The highlight of this phase will be the International Fleet Review, observed by foreign and national dignitaries.

Introduction of AMAN Dialogue

Rear Admiral Munib highlighted that the increasing global participation in Exercise AMAN reflects international confidence in Pakistan Navy’s role in collaborative maritime security. Building on this momentum, the first-ever AMAN Dialogue will be held alongside Exercise AMAN-25.

The AMAN Dialogue will bring together Chiefs of Navies, Coast Guards, and Defence Forces from around the world to exchange perspectives on global and regional maritime issues. It will serve as a strategic platform for formulating innovative solutions to address evolving maritime challenges, merging intellectual discourse with real-time practical experiences.

Pakistan’s Role in Global Maritime Security

Rear Admiral Munib underscored that AMAN-25 will enhance maritime security and strengthen Pakistan’s position as a key maritime player. The exercise underscores Pakistan’s commitment to regional and global peace, shared prosperity, and the protection of its Sea Lines of Communication and economic interests.

Exercise AMAN-25 and the AMAN Dialogue are expected to foster deeper international cooperation, reinforcing Pakistan Navy’s pivotal role in ensuring maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.
