Abu Dhabi: The Embassy of Pakistan in Abu Dhabi organized a cultural evening featuring a thought-provoking talk by Ms. Ursula Perlwitz, a distinguished German historian and traveller, alongside an exhibition of Pakistani artworks.
Born in Hamburg in 1934, Ms. Perlwitz lived in Karachi between 1963 and 1968 during her husband’s posting with Lufthansa. With a lifelong passion for archaeology, languages, and history, she has travelled extensively across Europe, Africa, and Asia.
The interactive discussion was moderated by Dr. Saba Karim Khan of New York University Abu Dhabi and attended by ambassadors, diplomats, and members of the Pakistani community.
In her remarks, Ms. Perlwitz fondly recalled her time in Pakistan, highlighting visits to Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, the northern areas, and former East Pakistan. She spoke of her fascination with Mughal art, her collection of miniature paintings, and memorable visits to Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. Recalling the warmth and hospitality of the Pakistani people, she remarked: “I was curious to go there and was very happy, and I loved it all. Pakistan’s culture, cuisine, and strong women left a deep impression on me. Pakistan Zindabad!”
She candidly answered questions during the discussion and expressed her desire to visit Pakistan again.
Ambassador Faisal Niaz Tirmizi thanked Ms. Perlwitz for sharing her experiences: “Your talk beautifully reflects the kindness you found in Pakistan. Your memories and your unique collection of photographs from the 1960s capture a fascinating chapter of Pakistan’s history. I would encourage you to write a book to preserve them for future generations.”
Following the discussion, the Embassy hosted an art exhibition showcasing the works of Pakistani artist Tehseen Badar, known for his figurative and cultural themes, landscapes, calligraphy, and portraits. The exhibition also featured the works of Saima Furqan and Dr. Rabia Sheikh.
Ambassador Tirmizi praised the exhibition, noting: “I found Mr. Tehseen Badar’s art captivating and inspiring. Pakistani art and culture hold immense potential, and at the Embassy, we strive to project and promote our artists and their works.”
The event highlighted Pakistan’s cultural richness and its enduring friendship with the global community.
