Tashkent – In an era of escalating climate threats and environmental crises, Uzbekistan has emerged as a proactive leader in promoting sustainable green development. Under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the country is advancing a bold environmental agenda that aims to balance economic progress with ecological preservation.

Green Development: A Strategic National Priority

President Mirziyoyev has consistently emphasized that green development is not just a global trend but a strategic necessity. Facing challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, and biodiversity loss, Uzbekistan has adopted sustainable policies to ensure the well-being of future generations.

The recently published book “The Path of Green Development of New Uzbekistan” documents 310 quotes and 54 major green initiatives introduced by the President between 2017 and 2025. These focus on renewable energy, efficient water use, biodiversity conservation, and climate adaptation.

From Climate Awareness to Action

Global warming, ecosystem degradation, and resource depletion are pressing challenges. Uzbekistan is transitioning from traditional industrial models to a green economy, prioritizing renewable energy and environmental protection.

President Mirziyoyev has repeatedly stated:

“Only by efficiently using limited land and water resources, eliminating environmental problems, and adopting green development can we ensure sustainable progress and population well-being.”

This vision is backed by robust actions, including investments in solar and wind power, emission reduction goals, and strengthened environmental legislation.

Key Climate Initiatives by Uzbekistan

President Mirziyoyev has presented several scientifically grounded proposals on the international stage, including:

  • Recognizing climate change as a major regional challenge at COP28 in Dubai
  • Calling for a Global Framework for Climate Change Adaptation under the Paris Agreement
  • Advocating the creation of a Climate Science Forum at the “Green University” in Tashkent
  • Proposing a Climate Technology Expo Hub in the Aral Sea region
  • Highlighting Central Asia’s vulnerability, where warming occurs at twice the global average

These initiatives reinforce Uzbekistan’s dedication to tackling climate issues both regionally and globally.

Central Asia’s Unified Green Vision

Speaking at the 78th UN General Assembly, President Mirziyoyev stressed that Central Asia remains one of the world’s most vulnerable regions due to the Aral Sea tragedy. He urged joint regional efforts to combat desertification, manage transboundary water resources, and create a unified green energy space.

Uzbekistan has led efforts to:

  • Establish a Regional Climate Technology Center
  • Launch reforestation projects on the dried seabed of the Aral Sea
  • Promote water diplomacy based on the Helsinki Convention
  • Push for over 10 UN resolutions on environmental challenges in Central Asia

These steps highlight Uzbekistan’s regional leadership in climate diplomacy.

Institutionalizing the Green Transition

Green development is now embedded in Uzbekistan’s national policy. Programs aim to:

  • Increase renewable energy share to 30% by 2030
  • Reduce water loss through precision farming
  • Build energy-efficient infrastructure
  • Launch smart urban projects like “Tashkent – Green Capital”

With backing from international investors such as Masdar and ACWA Power, Uzbekistan is expanding clean energy infrastructure in regions like Navoi, Bukhara, and Samarkand.

Educating for a Sustainable Future

President Mirziyoyev underlines the importance of environmental education, particularly for youth. Promoting ecological thinking, compassion for nature, and support for eco-tech startups are integral to Uzbekistan’s long-term strategy.

A national environmental performance rating system now evaluates regions and institutions, incentivizing green reforms across the country.

“Understanding nature and developing ecological awareness are key tasks for preserving the environment,” said the President.

Uzbekistan: A Model for Green Development

Under President Mirziyoyev’s leadership, Uzbekistan is becoming a model for integrating green policies into national planning. By aligning economic growth with ecological justice, the country is setting an example for other nations facing similar environmental challenges.

At major forums such as the SCO Summit, ECO Summit, and Central Asian Consultative Meetings, Uzbekistan has proposed regional green agendas covering renewable energy, water management, and climate resilience.

Future Prospects: A Green Vision for All

Uzbekistan’s approach is comprehensive—merging political will, scientific expertise, national policy, and global cooperation. President Mirziyoyev’s consistent advocacy for green development reflects a strategic shift towards long-term environmental responsibility.

Key takeaways:

  • Green development is now a core element of Uzbekistan’s constitutional and policy framework
  • The country is actively creating institutions, technologies, and public awareness tools for sustainability
  • Uzbekistan’s inclusive and practical green agenda could serve as a blueprint for other emerging economies

With this momentum, New Uzbekistan is not just participating in the global green agenda—it is helping lead it.
