Staff Reporter
Karachi: On Monday evening, a tragic accident occurred on Karsaz Road, resulting in the loss of two lives and injuries to three others. The Karachi police have charged a woman involved in the incident with murder.
On that fateful evening, Amna and her father were on their way home from Imran’s office in Scheme 33. Their journey was cut short when Natasha Danish, allegedly driving under the influence, lost control of her Toyota Land Cruiser and crashed into them. The impact was so severe that both Amna and her father died at the scene.
Details of the Accident
According to Traffic Police Deputy Inspector General Ahmad Nawaz Cheema, Natasha Danish was driving her Toyota SUV in an “extremely negligent manner.” The vehicle hit a motorcycle while negotiating a turn from Tipu Sultan Road towards the service road of Muslim League House. The SUV then collided with two more motorcycles before overturning after hitting a parked car.
The victims, identified by police as 26-year-old Amna Arif and 60-year-old Imran Arif, were among the five injured who were immediately taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for treatment. Sadly, both succumbed to their injuries.
Police Action and Investigation
The District East police confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) had been registered against Natasha Danish, who was arrested last night and handed over to the investigation wing. Although a medical examination was conducted, the report has not yet been submitted by the hospital.
The investigation wing is conducting a thorough probe, with further updates expected from the office of the District East’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Investigation.
Who Was Amna Arif?
Amna Arif was a young, ambitious woman working at a private firm in Karachi. She was pursuing her MBA, a dream she had been working towards with the support of her father, Imran Arif. Imran, a hard-working man, sold snacks to fund Amna’s education, demonstrating the dedication and love he had for his daughter’s future.
Court Proceedings: One-Day Custody Granted
A Karachi East court granted the police one-day custody of Natasha Danish, ordering her to be produced in court the following day. The investigation officer, Rehan Ahmed, informed the court that the suspect was admitted to JPMC’s psychiatry department and was not in a condition to appear in court. The court acknowledged that her physical custody was necessary for further investigation.
FIR Details
The FIR was filed at Bahadurabad police station on the complaint of Imtiaz Arif, whose brother and niece tragically died in the accident. The charges include sections related to rash and negligent driving, causing death and injury, under the Pakistan Penal Code.
No One Above the Law: Police Response
In response to social media claims suggesting a delay in police action, the investigation SSP’s spokesperson clarified that the police had followed the law without hesitation. The suspect was arrested, and the necessary procedures, including a medical examination, were carried out. The investigation wing is committed to presenting a charge sheet in court based on merit.
Context: Growing Concern Over Intoxicated Driving
Initial reports suggest that Natasha Danish might have been intoxicated, although this remains an allegation at this stage. If proven true, this would add a serious dimension to the crime, especially considering Pakistan’s strict laws against alcohol consumption and driving under its influence.
This incident has sparked concerns about the influence of social and economic status on the enforcement of law in Pakistan. There is a growing awareness of the rising issue of drug and alcohol abuse, particularly among affluent families.
Government Initiatives: Combating Drug Abuse
The Government of Pakistan is actively involved in international counter-narcotics initiatives. The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) of Pakistan is working on a comprehensive strategy to reduce drug abuse through awareness and rehabilitation programs. The country is committed to achieving a drug-free society through collaboration with global partners.
Conclusion: Seeking Justice Amidst Tragedy
This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the consequences of negligent driving and the importance of strict law enforcement. As the investigation unfolds, the public will be watching closely to see if justice is served.
