Rio de Janeiro: Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of resolving trade differences through dialogue and consultation, particularly regarding the European Union‘s tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. His remarks came during a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Strengthening China-Germany Ties
President Xi highlighted Germany’s role in promoting mutual understanding and cooperation. He acknowledged fruitful exchanges with Chancellor Scholz during Scholz’s visit to China earlier this year. Over the past six months, China and Germany have achieved significant progress in green development, sustainable transportation, and agricultural collaboration with Africa.
“As the world’s second and third largest economies, China and Germany have a responsibility to strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership. This collaboration fosters mutual growth and global stability,” Xi stated.
He reaffirmed China’s commitment to maintaining stable relations with Germany, urging both nations to respect each other’s core interests, prioritize shared goals, and address differences constructively.
Economic and Technological Collaboration
Xi underscored the integration of Chinese and German economic interests, labeling their bilateral cooperation as a path to shared development. He expressed China’s willingness to provide market opportunities for German companies and highlighted the need to enhance cooperation in digitalization, low-carbon initiatives, and intelligence-driven industries.
“China sees Europe as a vital pole in a multi-polar world and seeks to collaborate with Germany and the EU to address global challenges,” Xi added.

Chancellor Scholz recognized the positive strides in Germany-China relations since his visit to Beijing. He stressed the importance of bilateral and multilateral dialogue to resolve differences and achieve mutual benefit.
Regarding the EU’s tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, Scholz expressed hope for a swift resolution through dialogue and negotiation. He reaffirmed Germany’s dedication to fostering mutual respect and equality in its strategic partnership with China.
Discussions on Global Issues
The two leaders also discussed pressing global issues, including the Ukraine conflict and the Middle East crisis. Both sides emphasized the need for cooperative efforts to promote world economic recovery and shared prosperity.
