campaign in Pakistan
Karachi: The German Development Cooperation (GIZ), in collaboration with the Women Development Department, Government of Sindh, hosted an event titled “Empowering Women: 16 Days of Activism in Pakistan’s Textile Industry”. This initiative launched the global “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” campaign in Pakistan.
Key stakeholders, including government officials, textile industry representatives, and civil society members, participated in the event. Mr. Rashid Ahmad Zardar, Secretary of the Women Development Department, welcomed attendees and highlighted the campaign’s significance.
Ministerial Keynote and Industry Success Stories
Ms. Shaheena Sher Ali, Minister for Women Development, Sindh, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the importance of addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in workplaces. Industry leaders from AGI Denim, Artistic Milliners, and Mustaqim Industries shared success stories, showcasing practical measures and commitments to creating safer, more inclusive environments in the textile sector.
Statistics and Project Focus
Speakers stressed the urgency of tackling GBV, which affects 28% of women in Pakistan, impacting their safety, well-being, and workforce productivity. Ms. Saquiba Aziz, Component Manager at GIZ, presented the project “Promoting Employment by Strengthening the Role of Women in the Textile Industry”. She highlighted its efforts to advance gender equity and empower women in the textile workforce.
Call for Advocacy and Systemic Reforms
In his closing remarks, Mr. Ashique Hussain Kalhoro, Deputy Director of the Women Development Department, underscored the need for continued advocacy and systemic reforms to combat GBV.
