London: The Pakistan High Commission has filed a complaint with London authorities. This follows an attack on former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s car. The incident occurred outside the Middle Temple as Isa was leaving a legal event.
Details of the Incident
PTI UK organized the protest against the Middle Temple’s invitation to Isa after his retirement. Around 10:20 PM, as Isa’s car left the Temple, protesters surrounded it. Shayan Ali and his mother, Sadaf Mumtaz Malik, led the attack. They hit the car with fists and kicked it. Other participants included Aisha Ali Qureshi, Sadia Faheem, and Faheem Khan.
In a video of the attack, Shayan Ali said, “Mr. Qazi Faez Isa had lowered his head, but we caught him. His car hit a protester, and we will register a case against him and the police.” He insisted they kept their promise to confront Isa.
Protesters’ Reactions
Aisha Qureshi said, “Qazi Faez was hiding his face. You disgraced Pakistan. Today we disgraced you.” Sadia Faheem added, “He was hiding his face, which means he has done something wrong.”
After the attack, PTI activists celebrated. They claimed they caught Isa hiding from them. Shayan Ali also said, “Anyone corrupt who comes to the UK and works against the rule of law, we will make their lives hell.”
Government Response
The Pakistani High Commissioner to the UK condemned the attack. He said, “What happened to Qazi Faez is unfortunate. We will take action against those involved.” He emphasized that the attackers do not represent Pakistan.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi strongly condemned the actions. He directed NADRA to identify the attackers using video footage. He also confirmed they would register an FIR in Pakistan. Additionally, he said officials would block the attackers’ ID cards and passports and consider revoking their citizenship.
PTI UK’s Position
A PTI UK spokesman distanced the party from Shayan Ali. He stated that Ali acted for self-promotion. He confirmed that the official protest ended at 7 PM. Therefore, Ali’s actions were his own.
High-Profile Honor for Qazi Faez Isa
Justice Qazi Faez Isa, who retired as Pakistan’s top judge on October 25, is now the first Pakistani judge to become a bencher at Middle Temple, a respected British legal institution established in the 14th century. The institution, among the Inns of Court in London, grants legal training and licenses to British lawyers. Isa attended the ceremony at Middle Temple after his appointment, marking a historic milestone for Pakistani representation in the global legal community.
The Middle Temple is one of four prestigious Inns of Court in London. These institutions are key to legal education and practice.
