Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah officially inaugurated the newly upgraded National Bank Stadium in Karachi, marking its completion ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The renovation, completed in a record 120 days, enhances the stadium’s facilities to international standards.
Representing President Asif Ali Zardari, CM Murad Ali Shah praised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for its swift execution of the project. The ceremony was attended by Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, MQM-P Convener Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and other dignitaries.
The CM reaffirmed his government’s commitment to sports, highlighting Karachi’s passion for cricket. “The Sindh government is dedicated to providing top-tier sports facilities in the city,” he stated. He also recalled the 2018 upgrades to the stadium for Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches and assured continued support for cricket and other sports.
Looking ahead to the ICC Champions Trophy, he expressed confidence in Pakistan’s cricket team, saying, “We hope our Shaheens deliver an outstanding performance.” He emphasized that winning and losing are part of the game but encouraged a strong fighting spirit on the field.
Grand Inauguration Ceremony
The PCB organized a grand opening event with live music, a dazzling fireworks display, and an immersive light show, offering free public entry. Performers included renowned artists Ali Zafar, Shafqat Amanat Ali, and Sahir Ali Bagga, adding to the festive atmosphere.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced that the upgraded National Bank Stadium now meets a higher standard than Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. In recognition of the workers’ dedication, free tickets were offered to those involved in the renovation for Pakistan’s upcoming tri-nation series match against South Africa.
“The National Bank Stadium now stands as a modern, world-class facility, ensuring an exceptional experience for both players and spectators,” Naqvi said. He acknowledged the skepticism surrounding the project but credited the tireless efforts of 5,000 workers for making it a reality. He also appreciated the provincial and local governments’ support, particularly in parking arrangements.
Naqvi reassured fans of the PCB’s trust in captain Rizwan and the selection committee. “Believe in the team, support them, and they will continue to deliver strong performances,” he added.
